Great Teachers Discuss Lessons for Educators from the Pandemic

COVID-19 forced universities to quickly adapt to changing public health realities and navigate new ways to deliver curriculum and keep students engaged in a challenging environment. With a summer to prepare, many faculty learned new technological tools and pedagogies to prepare for hybrid classrooms and online-only courses. Some worked well, and some did not. As schools and colleges return to “normal” in-person teaching this fall, how might we use these new tools and pedagogies to enhance our courses and curricula moving forward? This panel features award-winning teachers from a variety of universities who will discuss how they and their colleagues adapted, and what lessons we can take away from an academic year shaped by a global pandemic. Some of the areas to be covered will include 1) adapting a multimedia storytelling class for a hybrid classroom; 2) the challenges and possibilities of discussing diversity, equity, and inclusion with students in a Zoom environment; 3) pivoting an international class that can’t travel internationally; 4) activities and insights that deserve a move from remote to in-person teaching and learning; 5) checking on, and being respectful of, the mental health and well-being of students. Moderator: Brad Gorham, Syracuse University
Panelists: Jennifer Billinson, Christopher Newport University; Bethany Swain, University of Maryland; Carolyn Hedges, Syracuse University; Lanier Holt, Ohio State University
